Story
Dying Light 2 Stay Human takes place around 20 years after the original game in a place known as The City. It’s the largest settlement of humans and one of the only places left that remains uninfected from the virus outbreak that caused worldwide devastation. Described as a modern dark ages, the protagonist Aiden Caldwell finds himself in the City which is deep in conflict as different factions are trying to assume power. Coupled with mysterious dreams and visions, Aiden sets about finding answers and resolving the wider issues so that humanity can continue to survive.
Decisions made about how each faction interacts and deals with their conflict will have repercussions throughout The City; one wrong move could start a war or by playing the right moves, actually bring settlements together. Key NPCs you’ll meet throughout the game will also dictate how the games’ 20 hours of main story unfold. We’d hazard a guess that team work makes the dream work so would err on the side of keeping everyone as happy as can be!
Techland estimate its four times bigger than the previous game (with one developer saying there’s probably 500 hours worth of content to explore). With the narrative being handled by some of the team working on The Witcher 3, we’d suspect this to be fairly accurate.
Gameplay
Dying Light 2 Stay Human is set in a huge open world and in the first person and as you know, the main rule of any zombie apocalypse is to keep moving. By utilising Parkour skills, Aiden is able to zip along the map to collect resources and consumables, as well as completing missions. With the map being so vast, there is a lot of city to explore. Sometimes this will result in a handy weapon, or perhaps a shortcut that the creatures have yet to find.
The day and night cycle returns in Dying Light 2. The enemies are pretty useless, bumbling fools during the day and for the most part can be avoided. When the sun goes down it’s a different story as the darkness powers up the creatures as they emerge from their nests, and as they have a taste for blood, they can quickly overwhelm players.
Luckily Dying Light 2 has a co-operative mode for up to four players so that you’re not alone when it comes to taking out the infected.
Hidden throughout the world are various weapons ranging from your typical guns and bats to stealthy crossbows that keep the noise to a minimum. Traps and environmental hazards can be utilised to help in sticky situations, and if all else fails, you can always make sure you fall from a great distance and use a zombie as an airbag.
Needless to say, there’s a lot of depth that can be found in the combat and as you progress, the opportunity to level up and unlock skills is all to tempting. Experience is awarded in two areas, combat and movement. Taking traversal actions like climbing, jumping or vaulting will be rewarded in the parkour-experience bar. The more complicated and skilful movements players perform, the more experience will be able to gain. The same goes for combat; the more enemies that become even-more-dead and in the most inventive ways will give the most experience.
EDIT – 14 JANUARY
Last night, Techland released the last Dying 2 Know developer update detailing the 4 player co-op mode as well as a deeper look into how the console versions, particularly the PlayStation 4 & Xbox One builds of the game are stacking up.
The video can be found below and the look at the co-op mode starts around three minutes in:
Pre Orders
As with most video games, there is an incentive to hand over your hard earned cash before the game hits the shelves, and Dying Light 2 Stay Human is no exception!
All pre-orders will come with the exclusive digital Reload Pack and Reach for the Sky Pack, featuring unique outfits, weapons, backpack and paraglider skins. Reach for the Sky Pack, was created in collaboration with Rosario Dawson (The Mandalorian, Sin City), who plays Lawan, a key character whose fate connects with main protagonist Aiden.
If you plump for the Deluxe Edition (either physically or digitally) of the game, there will be a few more in game goodies as well as a digital artbook and soundtrack. The first story DLC will be bundled in too, but we know next to nothing about this, apart from that it exists. Presumably it’ll be sold separately.
Finally there is the Ultimate Digital Edition & Collectors Physical editions of the game. These include everything as above along with the second story DLC, 2 hour night time XP boost and “Crafting items”. The Collectors Edition also comes with a lovely statue of Aiden as he’s about to stick something pointy into a zombie. Nice.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human will finally release on 4th February 2022 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch (Cloud Version). If you buy the PS4 or Xbox One version of the game, the next gen upgrade is included at no extra cost.
