The Longing-ist Playthrough: Day 26 – 26/01/22 – 330 Days, 14 Hours, 51 Minutes and 42 Seconds…

With only one task one my mind and the rest of the kingdom all but forgotten, Day 26 was a pretty black and white day. It would be boom or bust. Success or failure. Win or lose. The entire length of my play session depended on what happened in the [mushroom cave] – I had no idea how long I’d be playing when I picked up my Switch, but I prayed it was going to be an exciting evening of exploration…

I snatched up my Switch and found Monty waiting patiently at home for me to arrive. I immediately asked him to head up to the [mushroom caves], hoping more than knowing that the crook-fungus had bloated into an Abomination overnight. 🤞🏻

We arrived up there a little while later, and I watched from between my fingers as Monty approached the [tall ledge]… Please be big and green, please be big and green, please be big and green… 🥺

But there was no change. Again.

I had been at the mercy of these unaccommodating fungi for going on a week, and I was getting really quite fed up with it. I turned my Switch off for a while, leaving Monty stood amidst the purple mushrooms, staring longingly at the [tall ledge]. I imagine.

When my patience had finally been restored, I decided to back-track through all my Switch screenshots of the [mushroom caves], and more specifically, those with Abominations in… There HAS to be something I’m missing… It took me a while to scour through them all, and I was beginning to think that I’d never have an idea of what to do.

Wait a minute… 🤔

Just as I was about to give up, I stumbled on two shots of a similar area a few days apart, and I saw it. The clue that I needed. Every time a purple mushroom seems to have changed into an Abomination, there’s always a green one nearby… Could that have been it? Was this strange bloating an infection of some kind? A reaction between the green fungi and the purple ones that made this happen?

There’s only one way to find out…

I loaded The Longing again and had Monty pluck and eat one purple mushroom growing near the [tall ledge] to make room. I then had him toddle back down into the caves to pick up a green fungus and bring it back; I had him plant it as close the crook-fungus as I could… Here goes nothing…

And with that, we were done for the night. I sent Monty home and put down my console… If this doesn’t work then honestly, I’m screwed. Wish me luck.
