Sony Announces New PlayStation Plus Options
Sony have revealed their long awaited PlayStation Plus revamp, announcing that the subscription service will be split into three tiers and incorporate their streaming service – PlayStation Now, as well as including cloud streaming and a number of titles from almost all generations of PlayStation. This is scheduled to be rolled out in June and we’ve got all of the information.
As expected, Sony isn’t taking on Microsoft’s Game Pass in a straight fight. The three tiered system is an amalgamation of both PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, rather than a platform to offer their newest titles.
There will be PS5 games offered, however these will be the older titles where sales have slowed down considerably. While the full line-up isn’t confirmed, having Miles Morales and Returnal available at launch will surely attract subscribers to move to the higher tiers.
It’s nice to see older games from Sony’s back catalogue make an appearance too. While we don’t know which games will make the jump, seeing the PS One and PSP libraries opened up to new players is a welcome addition.
The three tiered system is broken down as follows:
PlayStation Plus Essential
This is the current PlayStation Plus offering – Two free games a month (down from three), online multiplayer, PlayStation Store discounts and exclusive offerings & cloud storage for save files.
There’s no change to the price and remains £6.99 (€8.99/$9.99) monthly / £19.99 (€24.99/$24.99) quarterly / £49.99 (€54.99/$54.99) yearly.
If you have stacked your PlayStation Plus membership, at the moment you’ll be automatically moved here. We’re waiting on Sony to confirm if you can utilise your current subscription for a discount to a higher tier for a reduced rate.
PlayStation Plus Extra
Same benefits as above but includes around 400 PlayStation 4 & PS5 games to download. The full list of games will be made available closer to launch but Sony have said to expect both Spider-Man games, God of War & Returnal from their first party line-up. Third parties will also show support
The cost is £10.99 (€13.99/$14.99) monthly / £31.99 (€39.99/$39.99) quarterly / £83.99 (€99.99/$99.99) yearly
PlayStation Plus Premium
Same as the above two tiers but also adding up to 340 additional games, including classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations & PS3 games available via cloud streaming.
You’ll also be able to stream PS4 games instead of downloading them, handy if you wanted to save console space. All streaming will work via both PS4, PS5 consoles and PC.
Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy.
This package is set for a cost of £13.49 (€16.99/$17.99) monthly / £39.99 (€49.99/$49.99) quarterly / £99.99 (€119.99/$119.99) yearly.
Due to the revamp of PlayStation Plus, the current PlayStation Now offering will end. If you’re fully subbed, you’ll be moved over to the Premium tier at no extra cost until your subscription runs out.
PlayStation Plus Deluxe (Select Markets) will be available in place of Premium for a discounted rate if that region doesn’t have Cloud Streaming services.
The new PlayStation Plus system is due for release in June.
