To the joy of gun-toting invertebrate fans everywhere, Digital Eclipse and Team17 Digital announce Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition! 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the original release of Worms Armageddon, and the creators wanted to celebrate their iconic game with a re-release to cater to new and returning fans alike.

Worms Armageddon released in 1999 and went on to become the most beloved entry in the Worms franchise. The teams have pulled out all the stops for this 25th year anniversary edition, with all manner of enhancements and quality-of-life improvements added to bring things up to date. On top of a complete overhaul of the UI across all platform versions, a host of other additional features have been added, including:

  • Optimised controller support for all consoles
  • Achievements and Trophies
  • New display features such as modern aspect ratios, enhanced HD and graphics options
  • An interactive museum dedicated to the history of the franchise, including never-before-seen interviews with the developments teams, old and new
  • New save system
  • Fully playable version of the Game Boy Colour version of Worms Armageddon

As you would hope, online play is supported too, so up to six players can get together to team-up or battle against each other remotely. The online play is also cross-generational, allowing PS4 and PS5 platers to play against one another, as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series owners.

I was obsessed with Worms Armageddon back in the PS1 era, and I’m stoked to hear that this powerhouse of comedic action-strategy is getting a glow-up for modern players to enjoy. Packed full of skilful tutorials and tricky missions, as well as the maniacal multiplayer mode, there were hours of gameplay available in the original, and I’m sure the anniversary edition will be no different.

Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition will release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PS4 on 26th September 2024.
