Sony Announces PlayStation 5 Pro, Due Out In Time For Christmas

Sony has confirmed the existence of the long-rumoured PlayStation 5 Pro model. The system will be released as an all-digital version on 7 November. The PlayStation 5 was originally released in 2020, with a slim model releasing in 2023, and has clocked up over 50 million in sales so far in its console cycle.

The main aim of the PS5 Pro is to remove the decision between Fidelity and Performance modes seen in this generation. Mark Cerny took to YouTube to announce the upgraded system is expected to deliver an almost double boost over the original models thanks to an upgraded GPU that renders at 45% above the base PS5. This means certain games can finally achieve the 4K/60FPS targets that were touted at the beginning of the generation.

The console is the same size as the original PS5 which was released in 2020 and when the PS5 Pro releases on 7 November, it will be available for £699.99 / $699.99 / €799.99. For this price, people will get an all-digital PS5 Pro with a 2TB SSD and DualSense controller. If players want to play their physical games, then a UHD drive will be available separately. In comparison the current slim models retail at £479.99 for the disc version and £389.99 for the digital version.

The PS5 Pro will also give a graphical boost thanks to improved Ray Tracing and AI tech, dubbed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). These features are designed to make the most of the PS5 Pro’s graphical capabilities, without compromising on the fluidity that higher frame rates bring. These changes have been shown across Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part II and will be available via game patches from Sony’s studios and various third parties. Not only this, but the machine is able to natively boost the performance of PS4 and PS5 titles without the need for an update. While PS5 Game Boost won’t improve the graphics, but games should run much smoother.

The timing of the announcement comes at a curious time. While Sony is riding high on the number of consoles sold, particularly compared to the PS4 and the Xbox Series X/S from Microsoft, there have been several issues elsewhere. Last week, Sony turned the Concord servers off after just 14 days on the market and stealthily increased the price of the Dualsense controller by an extra £5. That’s not forgetting the various layoffs across many of its studios throughout 2024.

The PlayStation 5 Pro will be available from 7 November 2024.
