A new challenger in the “Bullet Heaven” genre of games has emerged. Wildkeepers Rising: Echoes of the Guardians has been announced by the Canadian Indie developer Lioncode Games and is coming soon to Steam. The studio has been around since 2020 and has previously produced the S-RPG Mech Armada.

As can be seen in Wildkeepers Rising‘s first trailer, the game looks set to merge monster-catching mechanics with the emerging Bullet Heaven genre. Unlike bullet hell games where players push forward to take on enemies, bullet heaven games have a more relaxed approach where the baddies swarm to the protagonist. Games like Vampire Survivors have given more prominence to the addictive genre in recent years and Wildkeepers Rising looks set to continue the trend.

In Wildkeepers Rising, guardians can be recruited to help the protagonist survive waves of enemies and progress through the top-down battler. As each round progresses, players can collect gems from the battlefield to level up and recruit more monsters to prevent failure.

According to Lioncode Games, the hand-drawn monsters have taken some inspiration from several places, including arcade beat-em-ups of yesteryear and the creations of artists including Akira Toriyama, Hayao Miyazaki, and Jim Henson. The result of these designs is to give Wildkeepers Rising a whimsical appearance that players can enjoy.

Speaking about Wildkeepers Rising and the implementation of catching monsters, Lioncode Games Director, Sergio Garces, explained:

We’ve seen survivor games adopt some twists since the original recipeintegrating mining, guns, and god boons; Wildkeepers further innovates by adding adorable creature collecting and party synergy to the dopamine rush and replayability of games like Vampire Survivors or Death Must Die.

Currently, Wildkeepers Rising doesn’t have a firm release date but the Steam page is live to add it to gamers’ wishlists. We think that the rising popularity of the bullet heaven genre, and the adorable graphic style are well worth keeping an eye on.

Wildkeepers Rising: Echoes of the Guardians is coming soon to PC via Steam.
