Ahoy, Matey! Return To Monkey Island Sailing Onto Next-Gen Consoles
Avast ye, landlubbers! Return to Monkey Island is dropping anchor on next-gen! There’s nothing quite like dipping your toes into the pool of nostalgia to take you back to your gaming roots and remember why you fell in love with the digital medium in the first place, and Return to Monkey Island is an exciting plunge into an old series beloved by many.
The Monkey Island series is an epic saga of adventure, piracy, romance and root beer! Created by Ron Gilbert and originally developed and published by Lucasfilm Games, the latest instalment Return to Monkey Island hands over the helm to developer Terrible Toybox and publisher Devolver Digital (the name behind Shadow Warrior and Hotline Miami). Released on September 19th 2022 for Nintendo Switch, macOS and Windows, and October 26th 2022 for Linux, owners of new gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X/S can snap up the single-player graphic adventure game on November 8th 2022… that’s today!
Return to Monkey Island follows treasured swashbuckling hero Guybrush Threepwood as he parries his way through foe and peril on his daring quest to finally uncover the secrets of Monkey Island! Joined by other familiar faces in the form of Elaine Marley, the highly intelligent and badass love interest of our hapless protagonist, and of course his arch-nemesis LeChuck, because no epic tale would be complete without a pirate captain turned zombie turned ghost… right?
The Monkey Island saga is well loved for its humour, player-friendly attributes, rewarding (if not oft-times illogical) puzzles, and cheeky breaking of the fourth wall, where several characters acknowledge that they are in a video game – and the newest title in the series promises to deliver much of the same formula that has won over so many hearts since the first intrepid adventure in 1990. With a beautiful new art-style, a revolutionised point-and-click system compatible with more modern-day systems, and a whole cast of cherished characters returning from the briney deep, Return to Monkey Island takes the shimmering golden doubloons of old and polishes them into glittering gemstones of present-day gaming.
Already favourably reviewed and praised by critics across the board, if you enjoyed the original series (#90skidclub!), then you’ll definitely want to load up a ‘sea shanties’ playlist and take a dive! Just, beware the zombie pirate ghosts, savvy?
