E3 2022 has been cancelled the ESA have confirmed. The news broke last night that the event, which was set to be an all-digital affair has been shelved, but preparations are underway for a hybrid digital & in-person affair in 2023.

The news comes after the ESA, the team behind E3, announced earlier in the year that 2022’s summer event would be a repeat of last year’s all-digital event.

In a statement to IGN, the ESA advised that:

We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience.

“We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.”

E3 has been a staple in the world of video games since the mid-1990s, where it became the place for journalists, hobbyists and the general public to gather and find out the big games we’d all be playing in the coming year. With publishers like Nintendo and Sony moving focus to dedicated digital events and with the pandemic causing havoc, E3 has been less of a powerhouse.

Hopefully with the in-person & digital hybrid set up in 2023, the LA event will be back bigger and better than ever. This doesn’t mean we’re completely devoid of information in June, as The Game Awards founder, Geoff Keighley, announced he’s bringing the Summer Games Fest back for another year. Quite what this will look like is under wraps but at least we have some events to tide us over.
