Funcom Provides Details About Dune: Awakening, Confirms It Is An MMO

Dune: Awakening will be a survival MMO when it launches on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The news comes from the latest developer presentation released by Funcom as they build anticipation for the next game in the Dune franchise.

Set in an alternate timeline to the Frank Herbert books, Dune: Awakening tells the story of the war for Arrakis if Paul Atreides was never born. Players will be able to jump into a survival game where they hunt and compete for the planet’s valuable resource — Spice.

Funcom, who has previously worked on Conan Exiles, is developing Dune: Awakening to be a game that is visually similar to the recent movies created by Denis Villeneuve, but still has its own identity as players fight for control over Spice. The new developer direct dives into the game’s mechanics and how it will work as an MMO. Details about the plot and gameplay are being kept under wraps for now but a full reveal is expected at Gamescom in August.

Creative Director Joel Bylos outlines the server structure and the Overland Map, which connects various massive sandbox maps, allowing for a larger number of players in each area. To begin, players will start in the Hagga Basin, where they’ll create their character and first base. From here, gamers can journey out into Arrakis and explore what the world has to offer. Players will be able to team up with friends and randoms to complete challenges and progress the story, with Funcom expecting to see many changes over the next five years and beyond. Each server will be host to up to ‘hundreds’ of players and there will be a weekly map reset, cleverly disguised as a sandstorm which will also change the landscape and missions available.

While the information coming out of Funcom sounds positive, players will have to wait until Gamescom in August to get their first look at Dune: Awakening‘s gameplay, although Funcom has teased players with a look at an in-depth character creation tool, that showcases the vast number of details that are being considered for the game.

Dune: Awakening is set for release on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
