Next Generation Console Fight Hotting UP!
The next generation console war is already underway. Next month we see the reveal of Nintendo’s project Café, or as we like to call it, the NES HD. Rumours are flooding the internet that development kits for Mircosoft’s NextBox are already with the big gun developers like EA and Rockstar. Now Sony have joined the fray with news that research is underway for what will presumably be called the PlayStation 4.
In a conference to shareholders, Sony vise president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato had to say that the company is working on a future platform to follow the PS3 because of a rise in research and development costs. From the conference Kato said:
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life but this is platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing that product, I cannot discuss that – but our development is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”
This does not come as a surprise as most companies are usually researching the next generation, Nintendo 3DS was in very early stages of development even before the original “phat” DS went on sale. With Kato also saying that Sony expects a 10 year lifespan out of the PS3, this news would suggest that the PS4 is in the baby stages at the moment. One would not expect a full announcement until 2013 or beyond.
Sony’s revelation does confirm that they will be joining Nintendo & Mircosoft for the third consecutive console generation running.
