Nintendo Set to Discontinue My Nintendo Points in the Most Nintendo Way Ever

Nintendo will end My Nintendo Gold points on 25 March 2025. From this date, players will no longer be able to earn gold points on digital purchases. The platinum coins earned by completing weekly challenges and claimed against physical rewards and icons for Switch profiles will continue. Nintendo has given interesting caveats to the removal of the My Nintendo Gold points scheme.

From 25 March 2025, players will no longer earn any gold points on e-shop or gift card purchases. Previously, gamers could earn £0.01 per 1 x gold point on purchases to be used as a discount against games or DLC.

Any games that are preordered on the Nintendo e-Shop before 24 March will still earn gold points, even if the release date is after the discontinuation of the program. If a pre-order is cancelled, then there will be no gold points.

Gamers can still earn Gold points on physical games provided they are claimed within two years of the game’s release (UK/EU only – other regions will vary).

Players who have gold points can still use them and have one year from the date they were earned to use them. Those looking to save their points for games on the upcoming Switch 2 will be out of luck. Nintendo confirmed that gold points cannot be redeemed against any games “Exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.”

This means that although My Nintendo Gold points will be discontinued in March 2025, if gamers are stubborn enough, they could, in theory, hold onto their gold points until March 2028.

This would require buying the physical copy of Xenoblade Chronicles X which is out on 20 March 2025 and waiting until 19 March 2027 to claim those coins. Then it would be a case of waiting until March 2028 before using them as they expire.

In short, the My Nintendo Gold points will no longer continue past 25 March 2025. Players have 2 years (from the game’s release) to redeem their coins on physical games, and a further year to use them.

We are not sure if Nintendo has any plans to replace the service when the Nintendo Switch 2 launches later in the year, but we’ll keep an eye on any developments.
