The Longing-ist Playthrough: Day 33 – 02/02/22 – Less than 307 Days to go…
Yesterday was the first day I was actually a little thankful of having to leave Monty to his own devices – I had an incredibly busy day at the day job and then things took off at the VGamingNews offices in the evening too! (Keep your eyes here for a tonne of new reviews in February is all I can say, people!)
It wasn’t until late in the evening that I even realised I hadn’t opened The Longing, and I was pretty excited when it popped into my mind that I’d be able to fire it up the next day and see if I Monty would be able to creep past the [Eyes in the Dark] or not…

The Longing-ist Playthrough: Day 32 – 01/02/22 – Less than 308 Days to go…
Another day of leaving Monty on his own again yesterday… and I might have screwed it up by going on autopilot for a minute… 😳
Getting home after work and pulling out my Switch before starting on dinner, I accidentally clicked on The Longing without thinking! I panicked and shut the game down before the loading screen even showed up, so I’m hoping I haven’t undone a days ‘work’, but there’s no way I can know for sure.
Two thirds of the way there pal – hang in there.

The Longing-ist Playthrough: Day 31 – 31/01/22 – Less than 309 Days to go…
Yesterday was the first day in a month that I didn’t check in with Monty and it felt incredibly strange.
Obviously there’s nothing at all for me to write about today, except to say that I’m sure hoping that this plan isn’t in vain and that Monty doesn’t get grouchy at being left alone for a few days. I guess only time will tell, and I’ll just have to trust my judgement that this is the right thing to do.
Stick with me over the next few days folks – it’s all going to be very brief, but if I don’t check in with you AND I don’t check in with Monty, I think I might go crazy!

The Longing-ist Playthrough: Day 30 – 30/01/22 – 310 Days, 14 Hours, 17 Minutes and 21 Seconds to go…
As I put my part-baked theory to the test, there was little chance that I could look to achieve much on Day 30. It all hinged on whether Monty had become lonely enough to have become invisible to the darkness, but after just one night alone in the dark, I feared I was jumping the gun.

Day 29 was an incredibly brief affair indeed – another very busy day in real life meant that I couldn’t spend much time with Monty again, but I was beginning to think that that might not have been a bad thing after all…
I rejoined Monty and found that he had polished off the book and was raring to go with the day… Curb that enthusiasm, big man – you might not be too keen on this next idea. I had been thinking overnight about the advice that the [Face in the Wall] gave me about overcoming the darkness; it sounded like I needed to make Monty even more lonely in order to make him invisible to the thing up there… I wonder if…

While the events of yesterday had shaken me a little, they had certainly injected some excitement into my play after a week or so of struggling with the same old problem. Despite a renewed vigour about my explorations below the mountain, I had a lot of real-world commitments on Day 28, so I thought I’d just have a look around to see if my encounter had changed anything in the kingdom rather than look to progress any further.
I turned on the Switch and was relieved to see Monty safe and sound at [home], showing no ill-effects following his run-in with the [Eyes in the Dark]. The first place I wanted to check on was the [treasure room] – the place had been annoying me by not allowing me to try and break the glass and I wondered if I was now able to try again.

With ideas running short and my patience almost entirely depleted, Day 27 felt like a pivotal moment in my time beneath the mountain. Another failure today and I just knew that I’d struggle to muster up the encouragement to keep coming back for more punishment for a while and I might need a break from Monty in order to guarantee I could continue in the long run. Thankfully, it never came down to that…
I fired up my Switch and then fired up Monty.. Let’s goooooooooo! The long walk to the [mushroom mines] was a slow and dull one (as it always is), but I could feel myself getting nervous as we neared the [tall ledge]… What if it’s not grown again and I’ll have wasted yet another day… Monty made it to the high tunnel and I took a deep breath as I asked him to start walking…

With only one task one my mind and the rest of the kingdom all but forgotten, Day 26 was a pretty black and white day. It would be boom or bust. Success or failure. Win or lose. The entire length of my play session depended on what happened in the [mushroom cave] – I had no idea how long I’d be playing when I picked up my Switch, but I prayed it was going to be an exciting evening of exploration…
