The upcoming Ubisoft developed action-adventure I Am Alive has been given another trailer. Created by the same team that made Splinter Cell: Conviction, the game takes place in a fictional American city called Haventon, a year after The Event. This is predictably a worldwide cataclysmic event that has wiped out the majority of the human race but the main protagonist sets out to find both wife and daughter. The world is left in ruins, as can be seen in the trailer, and is barely inhabitable – the ground is covered by a toxic ash cloud. The title seeks to enhance gamer’s insecurity within the decaying landscape and present challenges by surviving in this hazardous world despite humanity’s last remains.

This trailer gives players the chance to see the ‘Rules’ for surviving in the city and what you will need to survive. The third-person perspective during navigation is controlled by the player but when aiming and shooting switches to first-person, for added tension.

During encounters with other humans, as hinted at in the trailer, players can use intimidation or bluffing to stay alive – not all humanity is good. Pointing empty guns at people or surprising enemies from behind are ways of doing so.

The trailer recommends climbing to get air at any opportunity; there will be plenty of exploration in this title. Hazardous areas are meant to be a key feature. Every movement has a cost, stamina is needed to survive. Players will be rewarded for this careful use of stamina by being rewarded hidden paths, resources and new survivors.

To survive, players will need to collect resources such as water, food and medicine. The climbing gear seen in the trailer is just one of these resources. Anything that can be salvaged will help the main character remain strong and healthy, it will also enable more survivors to be rescued.

Ubisoft have already stated the game-play will be rather tough and unforgiving but will inevitably be worth it. Retries can be collected throughout the game by collecting new victims and completing optional side quests.

I Am Alive will be released in Quarter 1 2012 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
