Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been officially unveiled by Ubisoft. The latest entry in the long-running franchise will be getting a release on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles towards the end of the year. To whet the appetite of players, Ubisoft has shown the game’s Japanese setting and given a glimpse at the two newest assassins in action.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to launch on 15 November and will take fans to Feudal Japan where players will take the roles of dual protagonists Naoe and Yasuke. Each character has a different playstyle, Naoe is a female shinobi who is light on her feet, can disappear into the shadows and is shown to be wielding the iconic hidden blade. Owing to Yasuke’s imposing stature, he is portrayed as a powerful samurai who may rely less on stealth and more on brute force.

Like most Assassin’s Creed games, Ubisoft has borrowed elements of history and incorporated them into Shadows. Naoe may be a fictional character, but Yasuke was a real figure in feudal Japan. Known as the African Samurai, Yasuke was the first foreigner who gained Samurai status during The Sengoku period, when various states of Japan were constantly at war. This slice of history serves as the starting point for the game and while we don’t know what direction Assassin’s Creed Shadows will take, it is safe to assume there will be a lot of combat to be had.

Development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is being handled by Ubisoft Montreal, who also produced Odyssey. The series will again feature an open world with map size being estimated to be roughly the same size as Odyssey. With the dual-protagonist set up and with each character having different styles, how you approach certain tasks and missions will mix up the established gameplay nicely.

Today’s announcement from Ubisoft sadly only includes cinematic footage and while this is lovely to look at, we do have to wait for a full gameplay reveal later down the line. That being said, there are some lovely in-game screenshots to look at, just to build anticipation that little bit more.
